Tuning

All pianos need it

All pianos need to be tuned, at least once a year but preferably every 6 months even if the piano isn’t being played regularly. Pianos go out of tune due to the change in temperature and humidity throughout the seasons. Unless you are practicing for 2-4 hours a day it is unlikely you will put the tuning out by playing. The tuning moves because of the way a piano is made and what it is made of. Pianos use living breathing materials and the design of the bridge and soundboard affect the up bearing on the strings. This changes the tension and thus changes the pitch due to temperature and humidity…. in a nutshell!!

Concert pitch is A 440hz which I tune all pianos to. Sometimes a piano can’t reach concert pitch because of its age or condition but that doesn’t mean it can’t be tuned, it can usually be tuned to itself or be brought up to pitch gently over 2-3 tunings.
